Do Adult Sites Store Your ID After Age Verification?
Some adult-site age checks keep your identity document for a period. Some process it and delete it within minutes. Privacy-preserving systems never send it to the adult site at all.
There is no single answer, and the reason matters: three separate parties can be involved — the adult service, the verification provider, and whatever proof-of-age result gets passed between them. Knowing which one holds what is the entire question.
Three possible data flows
1. The adult site receives and stores the document
Here the website collects your passport, driving licence or ID card directly. It ends up with considerably more information than confirming you are over 18 requires.
That is not automatically improper — smaller operators sometimes lack access to verification infrastructure — but the higher risk means the site owes you an explanation: why direct collection is necessary, whether unnecessary fields are redacted, how the file is protected, and when it is deleted. A site that cannot answer those has not thought about it.
2. A third-party provider checks the document
A specialist receives the ID, confirms age, and returns a status. The adult site may see only a token or a yes.
This reduces your exposure to the adult service, and it is worth being clear that it does not mean the document vanishes. Providers commonly retain it temporarily for fraud prevention, quality review, legal obligations, dispute handling or system security. Those are legitimate reasons. They are also reasons your document exists somewhere for longer than the check took, which is why the provider’s own privacy notice — not the site’s — is the document to read.
3. The system issues a reusable proof of age

What survives even after the image is deleted
This is the part most people miss. Deleting the document does not mean deleting the record of the check. A provider may keep:
- the fact that verification succeeded or failed;
- the date and time it happened;
- a transaction or verification reference;
- which method was used;
- fraud and security signals;
- a hashed or tokenised identifier;
- whatever is needed to handle complaints or audits.
None of this is as sensitive as a passport image. The question that matters is whether any of it can be linked back to an account or to browsing activity — because a retained reference that connects to your history is a different thing from an isolated log entry.
How to find the actual retention period
A homepage line about valuing your privacy tells you nothing. Find the age-verification privacy notice specifically and search the page for these terms:
- retain, retention, delete, deletion;
- identity document, biometric, facial image;
- verification result;
- fraud prevention, legal obligation;
- data controller, data processor.
A notice worth trusting separates two retention periods: one for the document image, one for the verification record. A notice that gives a single figure for everything has probably not distinguished between them internally either.
Seven questions before you upload
- Will the adult site see the document, or only the verification provider?
- Is the full document required, or can unnecessary fields be hidden?
- Is the image deleted immediately, after a stated number of days, or only on request?
- Is automated facial matching involved?
- Can the verification result be reused across services, or does each site repeat the process?
- Can you request access to, or deletion of, retained data?
- What happens to all of it when you close your account?
You will not always get seven answers. Getting four is usually enough to decide.
Red flags
- No verification provider named anywhere.
- No retention period stated at all.
- No explanation of what the adult site itself receives.
- A request to send the ID by email or a messaging app.
- A privacy notice that covers marketing extensively and never mentions age verification.
- No contact route for privacy questions or for disputing an incorrect result.
Should you redact part of the document?
Not unless the instructions explicitly permit it. Covering fields you consider unnecessary may improve privacy, and it may also fail the check and trigger a request for an unedited version — leaving you with two submissions instead of one.
The better signal is a provider that extracts only the age information automatically and states that unrelated fields are not retained. That is the system doing the redaction, which is where it belongs.
Does a reputable service remove the risk?
No. A better-known platform tends to have clearer processes and more to lose from a breach, which is a real advantage. It does not change the fact that the verification provider is frequently a separate company with its own policies, its own retention periods and its own security posture.
